About the International Academic Nursing Alliance

Our Mission

The International Academic Nursing Alliance (IANA) is a global internet network of nursing educators, linking resources and information from schools of nursing that facilitate collaborations, exchanges, mentoring opportunities, research and faculty development.

Delivering on Our Mission

Sigma Theta Tau International powers IANA as a database that allows nurses worldwide to access information and resources that can be used to foster high standards in nursing education to ultimately improve nursing care.

IANA will not have or hold products and services of its own. Rather, the system will direct users to the universities and/or faculty member(s) who have the information they seek. Once the match or lead has been provided, IANA steps out of the exchange. Users will contact the university, dean or faculty member directly to pursue the products, services or information.

To accomplish this, the system will offer search engine capabilities that allow users to search on keyword(s) and restrict the type of results through advanced search if they desire.

Using this concept, search results are returned and sorted on relevancy. In addition, results are tagged and/or cross-referenced to supply corresponding data about the “information type” (i.e. syllabi, sabbaticals, research findings, topical outlines, etc.), faculty member/contact, and the institution. Users will then be able to pursue the desired information via the contact information.

History

The development of IANA was facilitated by the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International* in September 1999, when 31 nurse leaders from around the world discussed its feasibility and desirability. Then, at a meeting in Atlanta, Ga., USA, in October 2000, representatives from 28 countries established an advisory committee and 10 work groups, which would function as the powerhouse of development. In March 2001, the advisory committee developed IANA's mission, vision and work schedule. IANA was formally constituted and its board of directors meets regularly to continue to develop IANA and to seek funding to support this new nursing alliance.

By linking the worldwide resources of nursing institutions, IANA provides the following benefits:
• Nursing programs are strengthened.
• Nursing faculty gain expanded resources.
• Nurses are provided more opportunities to access research and content.
• Nursing expertise is shared and nurtured.
• Health care delivery is tangibly improved.

IANA is collaborating with the International Network for Doctoral Education in Nursing [INDEN] to facilitate their data collection specifically on international doctoral programs. If your institution offers a doctoral program in nursing, we would like to encourage you to complete the questionnaire prepared by INDEN, by clicking the link below.
